We bought an 18 pound frozen turkey. Is it safe to leave it out of the refrigerator to thaw or should I just put it in the frig right now?
The best way is to thaw it in the refrigerator. It takes longer, but you don’t have to change out the water or even pay much attention to it. Leave the frozen turkey in its wrapper and then follow these guidelines:
– 10 pounds — 2 days plus 12 hours
– 15 pounds — 3 days plus 18 hours
– 20 pounds — 5 days
– 25 pounds — 6 days plus 6 hours
If you don’t have enough time, take the turkey out of the frig and submerge it in cool water. You’ll need to change the water every 30 minutes to make sure the water stays cool enough, but it will definitely thaw much faster. Here’s the guideline:
– 10 pounds — 5 hours
– 15 pounds — 7 hours
– 20 pounds — 10 hours
– 25 pounds — 12 hours
Remember, NEVER just leave the turkey out on the counter top and never put it hot water in order to try and speed things up.
